curl HTTP/2 RST_STREAM Use After Free Vulnerability

Vulnerability report for CVE-2026-92392, including description, CVSS score, EPSS score, affected products, exploitability, helpful resources, and attack-flow context.

Publication date: 2026-10-14

Last updated on: 2026-10-18

Assigner: curl

Description

During an upload, curl mishandles HTTP/2 `RST_STREAM` received from the server (with reason `HTTP_1_1_REQUIRED` or `REFUSED_STREAM`) leading to a use after free of a `struct Curl_easy` object.

CWE ID Description
CWE-416 The product reuses or references memory after it has been freed. At some point afterward, the memory may be allocated again and saved in another pointer, while the original pointer references a location somewhere within the new allocation. Any operations using the original pointer are no longer valid because the memory "belongs" to the code that operates on the new pointer.

Executive Summary

CVE-2026-92392 is a use-after-free vulnerability in the curl library during HTTP/2 uploads. When curl receives an RST_STREAM frame from the server with error codes HTTP_1_1_REQUIRED or REFUSED_STREAM, it mishandles the stream, leading to improper reuse of a freed struct Curl_easy object. This can cause crashes or undefined behavior.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check the version of curl installed on your system using the command: curl --version. If the version is between 8.12.0 and 8.22.0, the system is vulnerable. Additionally, monitor network traffic for HTTP/2 uploads that trigger RST_STREAM frames with error codes HTTP_1_1_REQUIRED or REFUSED_STREAM.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability may allow remote code execution if an attacker can exploit the freed memory object. It can cause application crashes, data corruption, or system instability. Users running vulnerable curl versions during HTTP/2 uploads are at risk.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability does not directly affect compliance with GDPR, HIPAA, or similar standards as it is a technical flaw in the curl library. However, if exploited, it could lead to remote code execution, potentially compromising data integrity or confidentiality. This may indirectly impact compliance by increasing the risk of unauthorized data access or processing, which could violate principles like data protection and security under GDPR or HIPAA.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately upgrade curl to a patched version (8.14.3, 8.16.2, 8.20.2, or 8.23.0 or later). If upgrading is not possible, apply the official patch from curl's repository. Disable HTTP/2 uploads if feasible until the upgrade is completed.
