GUIX Binary Resource Pixelmap Table Buffer Overflow

Vulnerability report for CVE-2026-92449, including description, CVSS score, EPSS score, affected products, exploitability, helpful resources, and attack-flow context.

Publication date: 2026-10-20

Last updated on: 2026-10-20

Assigner: Eclipse Foundation

Description

`_gx_binres_pixelmap_table_load()` in the GUIX binary resource (theme) loader indexes the pixelmap table with a value read verbatim from the resource file and never bounds it against the table size. A crafted theme drives a write of up to roughly 256 KB past the end of the table. The overflowed buffer is allocated by GUIX itself, through `_gx_system_memory_allocator`, rather than supplied by the caller, so the loader corrupts its own arena. The public API `gx_binres_theme_load()` takes no size parameter, so no amount of caller diligence prevents this. Reproduces in the shipped default configuration; `GX_BINARY_RESOURCE_SUPPORT` is enabled by default.

CWE ID Description
CWE-457 The code uses a variable that has not been initialized, leading to unpredictable or unintended results.
CWE-129 The product uses untrusted input when calculating or using an array index, but the product does not validate or incorrectly validates the index to ensure the index references a valid position within the array.
CWE-787 The product writes data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is in the GUIX library's binary resource loader. The function `_gx_binres_pixelmap_table_load()` reads an unchecked `map_id` from a theme file and uses it to index a pixelmap table without bounds checking. This causes a heap out-of-bounds write of up to 256 KB in memory allocated by GUIX itself, corrupting the memory allocator's metadata.

Detection Guidance

Detecting this vulnerability requires inspecting GUIX library versions and theme files. Check GUIX version with commands like 'guix --version' or inspect library files for version strings. Monitor for crashes or memory corruption when loading themes. No direct detection commands are provided in the context.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this by providing a maliciously crafted theme file, leading to memory corruption. This may cause crashes, data corruption, or arbitrary code execution. The vulnerability is exploitable via removable media or OTA updates, as the loader does not validate input.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately upgrade GUIX to version 6.5.2.202603 or later. Avoid loading binary resource files from untrusted sources. If upgrading is not possible, restrict theme file loading to trusted media or update channels.
