GUIX JPEG Decoder Buffer Overflow and Infinite Loop

Vulnerability report for CVE-2026-92454, including description, CVSS score, EPSS score, affected products, exploitability, helpful resources, and attack-flow context.

Publication date: 2026-10-20

Last updated on: 2026-10-20

Assigner: Eclipse Foundation

Description

The GUIX software JPEG decoder reads four kinds of marker segment without checking that each is long enough to hold what it reads. A truncated segment is therefore read past the end of the caller's image buffer. Separately, a zero chroma sampling factor makes the block decode loop non-terminating. Both reproduce in the default configuration, in which `GX_SOFTWARE_DECODER_SUPPORT` is enabled.

Executive Summary

The GUIX JPEG decoder has two flaws. First, it reads marker segments without checking their length, causing out-of-bounds reads past the image buffer. Second, a zero chroma sampling factor leads to an infinite loop during decoding. Both issues occur when the software decoder is enabled by default.

Detection Guidance

Detecting this vulnerability requires checking the GUIX software version. Use commands like 'guix --version' or inspect the library files for GUIX components. If the version is 6.5.1.202602a or earlier, the system is vulnerable.

Impact Analysis

The out-of-bounds reads may corrupt image state variables, causing crashes or limited heap influence. The infinite loop freezes the GUI thread, leading to a denial of service until a watchdog resets the device. This affects availability and stability of systems using GUIX.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade GUIX to version 6.5.2.202603 or later. Alternatively, disable the software decoder in GUIX settings or only decode trusted images to prevent exploitation.
