Description

The LearnPress – WordPress LMS Plugin for Create and Sell Online Courses plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Reflected DOM-Based Cross-Site Scripting via the 'orderby' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 4.4.7 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that execute if they can successfully trick a user into performing an action such as clicking on a link.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a Reflected DOM-Based Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) issue in the LearnPress WordPress LMS plugin. It exists in versions up to 4.4.7 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping in the 'orderby' parameter. Attackers can inject malicious scripts that execute when a user clicks a crafted link.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, inspect WordPress sites using the LearnPress plugin version 4.4.7 or lower. Check for suspicious URLs containing the 'orderby' parameter with script-like inputs. Use security plugins or manual code review to identify unsanitized inputs in the plugin's code.

Impact Analysis

Unauthenticated attackers could trick users into clicking a malicious link, leading to execution of arbitrary web scripts in their browser. This could result in session hijacking, data theft, or unauthorized actions on behalf of the user within the WordPress site.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to user data, potentially violating GDPR (data protection) and HIPAA (health data privacy) by exposing sensitive information. Compliance may be compromised if user data is compromised due to the XSS flaw.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update the LearnPress plugin to the latest version. If an update is unavailable, disable the plugin temporarily. Implement a web application firewall to block malicious 'orderby' parameter inputs. Monitor for unusual activity in server logs.
