Description

The MemberPress plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Cross-Site Request Forgery in versions up to, and including, 1.14.1. This is due to a bypassable nonce verification check in the save_profile_fields() function that uses an isset() condition at line 1119, allowing the security check to be completely bypassed by simply omitting the nonce parameter from the request. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to change authenticated users' email addresses via a forged request granted they can trick an authenticated user into performing an action such as clicking on a link, leading to account takeover through password reset functionality.

Executive Summary

The MemberPress plugin for WordPress has a Cross-Site Request Forgery (CSRF) vulnerability in versions up to 1.14.1. The issue is in the save_profile_fields() function where a nonce verification check can be bypassed by omitting the nonce parameter. This allows unauthenticated attackers to change email addresses of authenticated users by tricking them into clicking a malicious link.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability can be detected by checking if the MemberPress plugin version is up to and including 1.14.1. Review server logs for suspicious requests targeting the save_profile_fields() function with missing nonce parameters.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability could allow attackers to change your email address on your WordPress account without your knowledge. If you reset your password, the attacker could gain control of your account, leading to potential data theft or unauthorized actions on your behalf.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update the MemberPress plugin to the latest version beyond 1.14.1. Implement additional CSRF protections like stricter nonce validation or CAPTCHA on profile update forms. Monitor for unauthorized email changes or account takeover attempts.
