Description

The Password Protected plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via the bundled Freemius SDK's purchase-completion handler in all versions up to, and including, 2.8.4 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. Once the site's Freemius opt-in is complete (the normal state after an administrator clicks "Allow & Continue"), the handler processes the 'purchased_plan' request parameter on any wp-admin request from an authenticated user without any capability, nonce, or purchase validation, and stores it in a persistent, site-wide administrative notice. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with subscriber-level access and above, to inject arbitrary web scripts that execute automatically when an administrator views a standard admin page such as their Profile page.

Executive Summary

The Password Protected WordPress plugin up to version 2.8.4 has a stored XSS flaw in its Freemius SDK. After an admin opts into Freemius, the plugin stores unsanitized user input from the 'purchased_plan' parameter in a site-wide admin notice. Attackers with subscriber access or higher can inject malicious scripts that run when admins view pages like the Profile page.

Detection Guidance

Check WordPress admin pages for unexpected administrative notices or unusual input in the 'purchased_plan' parameter during Freemius opt-in. Review server logs for suspicious script injections in wp-admin requests.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could steal admin session cookies, take over the WordPress site, or perform actions as an admin. This includes installing malware, modifying content, or accessing sensitive data. The attack requires only subscriber-level access and no additional validation.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to personal data, violating GDPR and HIPAA requirements for data protection. If exploited, it may result in data breaches, triggering mandatory breach notifications and potential fines under these regulations.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the Password Protected plugin to the latest version beyond 2.8.4. Remove or restrict subscriber-level access if not required. Monitor admin pages for unauthorized script injections.
