Heap Overflow in DPDK vhost Library

Description

A flaw was found in the DPDK vhost library. When handling a virtio indirect descriptor table, the host reads the table length more than once from guest memory and can allocate a host copy before validating that length. A guest that changes the length between those reads, or that supplies an out-of-range next index on a small host copy in the vDPA relay path, can cause the host vhost process to walk past the validated mapping or heap copy. That can crash or disrupt the vhost process. Out-of-bounds bytes are consumed as descriptor fields for GPA translation and are not returned to the guest as payload. This is a residual issue in the non-contiguous indirect descriptor copy path introduced as part of the CVE-2018-1059 fix.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a time-of-check to time-of-use (TOCTOU) race condition in the DPDK vhost library. It occurs when handling virtio indirect descriptor tables. The host reads the table length multiple times from guest memory without proper validation. A malicious guest can change the length between these reads or provide an out-of-range index, causing the vhost process to access memory outside the validated mapping or heap copy. This can crash or disrupt the vhost process, leading to a denial of service.

Detection Guidance

Detecting this vulnerability requires monitoring for crashes or disruptions in the vhost process, particularly in DPDK-based environments. Check logs for vhost-user related errors or segmentation faults. Use system monitoring tools like 'dmesg' or 'journalctl' to identify crashes in the vhost process. No specific commands are provided in the context to directly detect this issue.

Impact Analysis

If exploited, this vulnerability can cause the vhost process to crash or become disrupted, resulting in a denial of service. It requires a compromised guest to manipulate the descriptor table length or index, so only environments with untrusted guests are at risk. The impact is limited to the vhost process and does not directly expose guest data.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability primarily impacts system availability and integrity by allowing a malicious guest to crash or disrupt the vhost process, leading to potential denial of service. It does not directly expose or leak sensitive data, which is a key concern for GDPR and HIPAA compliance. However, prolonged disruption could indirectly affect compliance by impacting service availability for regulated workloads.

Mitigation Strategies

Avoid exposing vhost-user to untrusted guests. Update to the latest patched versions of DPDK and affected Red Hat products. Monitor for crashes in the vhost process and apply vendor patches as they become available. No runtime mitigation exists beyond these measures.
