Description

The Cryptocurrency Donation Box – Bitcoin & Crypto Donations plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via data_object Parameter in all versions up to, and including, 2.2.13 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. This is exploitable by unauthenticated attackers because the cdbbc_payment_verify AJAX action is registered under wp_ajax_nopriv_ and its only authentication gate β€” a nonce check β€” is bypassable, as the cdbbc_donation_box nonce is publicly exposed to anonymous visitors via the wallets_data JavaScript object emitted by the [crypto-donation-box] shortcode.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) flaw in the Cryptocurrency Donation Box plugin for WordPress. It allows unauthenticated attackers to inject malicious scripts via the data_object parameter due to poor input sanitization and output escaping. The scripts execute when users visit infected pages.

Detection Guidance

Check WordPress sites using the Cryptocurrency Donation Box plugin for versions up to 2.2.13. Look for suspicious scripts in pages generated by the [crypto-donation-box] shortcode. Monitor AJAX calls to wp_ajax_nopriv_cdbbc_payment_verify for unexpected inputs.

Impact Analysis

Unauthenticated attackers can steal user sessions, redirect visitors to malicious sites, or deface your website. Since the plugin is widely used for donations, attackers may target payment or user data. The vulnerability is easy to exploit due to public exposure of a nonce.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to data breaches, violating GDPR (if personal data is exposed) or HIPAA (if protected health information is compromised). Non-compliance may result in fines or legal penalties due to unauthorized access to sensitive user data.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the Cryptocurrency Donation Box plugin to the latest version. If an update is unavailable, disable the plugin immediately. Review and sanitize all user inputs in donation forms. Implement strict output escaping for dynamic content.
