SQL Injection in Social Web Suite WordPress Plugin

Description

The Social Web Suite – Social Media Auto Post, Social Media Auto Publish plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to generic SQL Injection via the 'exclude_posts' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 4.1.12 due to insufficient escaping on the user supplied parameter and lack of sufficient preparation on the existing SQL query. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to append additional SQL queries into already existing queries that can be used to extract sensitive information from the database. The HMAC authentication gate protecting the endpoint is bypassable on any freshly activated installation where an administrator has not yet visited the settings page, because the secret_key option remains empty until lazily generated at that point, allowing an attacker to compute a valid token using hash_hmac('sha256', '', $timestamp) with any chosen timestamp.

CWE ID Description
CWE-89 The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. Without sufficient removal or quoting of SQL syntax in user-controllable inputs, the generated SQL query can cause those inputs to be interpreted as SQL instead of ordinary user data.

Executive Summary

This WordPress plugin has a SQL injection flaw in the 'exclude_posts' parameter due to poor input sanitization and missing SQL query preparation. Unauthenticated attackers can inject malicious SQL to extract sensitive database data. Additionally, the plugin's HMAC authentication can be bypassed on new installations because the secret key is empty until an admin first visits settings, allowing attackers to forge valid tokens.

Detection Guidance

Check WordPress plugins for 'Social Web Suite – Social Media Auto Post' versions up to 4.1.12. Inspect server logs for unusual SQL query patterns or errors. Use tools like WPScan to scan for vulnerable plugins.

Impact Analysis

Attackers could steal sensitive data from your WordPress database, such as user credentials, personal information, or other confidential content. If your site stores regulated data, this breach could lead to compliance violations and reputational damage.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could result in unauthorized data exposure, violating GDPR's data protection requirements or HIPAA's safeguards for protected health information. Organizations may face fines, legal penalties, and mandatory breach notifications if exploited.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the plugin to the latest version if available. Disable the plugin temporarily if no update exists. Implement web application firewall rules to block SQL injection attempts. Review database access logs for suspicious activity.
