Buffer Overflow in Cortex-A7 MMU Module Validation

Description

The Cortex-A7 MMU Modules port validates a caller-supplied buffer by translating **one address** β€” the first byte. The common Module Manager hands its range check the module instance, the start address and the complete byte size; the Cortex-A7 implementation discarded the instance and the size and asked the MMU a single question about the start. A memory-protected module therefore passed any range whose first byte was user-readable, however far the rest of it reached. Privileged dispatch code then read or wrote the whole range. Because every protected-module dispatcher that consumes a buffer or an extra-parameter array goes through this one macro, the defect is not in any individual service: it is in the primitive all of them rely on.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability involves improper validation in the Cortex-A7 MMU Modules port of Eclipse ThreadX. The system only checks the first address of a buffer range instead of the entire range, allowing privileged code to read or write beyond intended memory if the first byte is accessible. This flaw affects all protected-module dispatchers relying on this primitive.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, inspect the Eclipse ThreadX Cortex-A7 MMU module for improper buffer validation in the TXM_MODULE_MANAGER_CHECK_INSIDE_DATA macro. Check if the module only validates the first address of a buffer range instead of the entire range. Review code for calls to ATS1CUR and ensure buffer size and page boundaries are considered.

Impact Analysis

An attacker with limited privileges could exploit this to trigger out-of-bounds memory reads or writes in privileged code. This may lead to memory corruption, privilege escalation, or unauthorized data access. Exploitable scenarios include queue operations, event handling, and parameter arrays.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized data access or corruption, violating confidentiality and integrity requirements in GDPR and HIPAA. Non-compliance risks include data breaches, regulatory penalties, and loss of trust due to inadequate memory protection.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade to Eclipse ThreadX version 6.5.2.202603 or later, which includes a patch validating the entire buffer range. If upgrading is not possible, disable module memory protection (TXM_MODULE_MEMORY_PROTECTION) as a last resort, though this may reduce security.
