Description

The FV Player 8 plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via 'synopsis' Shortcode Attribute in all versions up to, and including, 8.1.7 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with contributor-level access and above, to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. Unauthenticated visitors can also exploit this vulnerability when the 'Parse Vimeo and YouTube links' (parse_comments) setting is enabled, as this causes the plugin to process shortcodes within comment text.

Executive Summary

The FV Player 8 WordPress plugin up to version 8.1.7 has a stored cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the 'synopsis' shortcode attribute. This flaw allows attackers with contributor-level access or higher to inject malicious scripts into pages. If the 'Parse Vimeo and YouTube links' setting is enabled, unauthenticated visitors can also exploit this via comment text processing.

Detection Guidance

Check for outdated FV Player plugin versions up to 8.1.7. Inspect WordPress sites for unauthorized script injections in synopsis shortcode attributes or comment text if parse_comments is enabled. Review server logs for unusual script execution patterns.

Impact Analysis

Attackers can inject scripts that execute when users visit affected pages. This could lead to theft of session cookies, account takeover, or defacement of your WordPress site. Users with contributor access or above can exploit this directly, while unauthenticated attackers can do so if the parse_comments setting is enabled.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to user data, violating GDPR's data protection requirements and HIPAA's safeguards for protected health information. A successful exploit may expose sensitive user data, resulting in compliance breaches and potential legal consequences.

Mitigation Strategies
  • Update FV Player plugin to version 8.1.8 or later to address security fixes.
  • Disable the 'Parse Vimeo and YouTube links' setting if enabled to prevent unauthenticated exploitation.
  • Audit and remove any suspicious scripts or content injected via the synopsis shortcode or comments.
