Time-Based SQL Injection in Gmedia Photo Gallery WordPress Plugin

Description

The Gmedia Photo Gallery plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to time-based SQL Injection via the 'gmedia__in' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 1.25.1 due to insufficient escaping on the user supplied parameter and lack of sufficient preparation on the existing SQL query. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to append additional SQL queries into already existing queries that can be used to extract sensitive information from the database. The unauthenticated mobile app endpoint dispatches the library action without validating the Mobile App feature flag, a nonce, or any WordPress authentication, meaning no account or session of any kind is required to exploit this vulnerability.

CWE ID Description
CWE-89 The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. Without sufficient removal or quoting of SQL syntax in user-controllable inputs, the generated SQL query can cause those inputs to be interpreted as SQL instead of ordinary user data.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a time-based SQL Injection in the Gmedia Photo Gallery WordPress plugin up to version 1.25.1. It occurs due to insufficient input sanitization in the 'gmedia__in' parameter and lack of proper SQL query preparation. Attackers can inject malicious SQL queries to extract sensitive database information without authentication.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability can be detected by checking for unusual SQL queries or database access patterns. Look for requests to the WordPress endpoint with the 'gmedia__in' parameter. Monitor for unauthenticated mobile app endpoint calls to the library action without proper authentication or nonce validation.

Impact Analysis

Unauthenticated attackers can exploit this to access sensitive database information, potentially including user credentials, personal data, or other confidential information stored in the WordPress site's database. This could lead to data breaches or further attacks.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to personal data, violating GDPR's data protection requirements and HIPAA's safeguards for protected health information. Organizations may face regulatory penalties, legal liabilities, and reputational damage if exploited.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update the Gmedia Photo Gallery plugin to the latest version beyond 1.25.1 to patch the SQL injection vulnerability. If an update is not available, consider disabling or removing the plugin until a fix is released.
