Description

The Food Store – Online Food Delivery & Pickup plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via 'service_type' Cookie in all versions up to, and including, 1.5.5 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. The attack is seeded unauthenticated by supplying a payload via the ?type= query parameter on the public checkout page, which the plugin writes directly into the browser's service_type cookie; this cookie value is later persisted to order meta and rendered unescaped in the admin panel.

Executive Summary

This is a Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the Food Store WordPress plugin. It allows unauthenticated attackers to inject malicious scripts via the 'service_type' cookie due to improper input sanitization. The injected scripts execute when users access affected pages, and the payload is stored in order meta and displayed unescaped in the admin panel.

Detection Guidance

Check WordPress sites using the Food Store plugin version 1.5.5 or lower. Inspect browser cookies for the 'service_type' parameter containing suspicious scripts. Review server logs for requests to the checkout page with unusual query parameters like '?type='.

Impact Analysis

Attackers could steal user sessions, redirect users to malicious sites, or perform actions on their behalf. Website visitors may have their data compromised, and administrators could see malicious content in the admin panel. The impact includes potential data theft, account hijacking, and website defacement.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to non-compliance with GDPR (data breaches exposing user data) and HIPAA (unauthorized access to protected health information if processed). It violates principles of data protection, integrity, and confidentiality required by these regulations.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the Food Store plugin to the latest version beyond 1.5.5 immediately. Remove any unauthorized admin users. Scan for injected scripts in order meta data and clean them. Block suspicious query parameters at the web server level.
