Description

The Abandoned Cart Pro for WooCommerce plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to SQL Injection via the guest cart persistent meta_value in all versions up to, and including, 10.8.0 due to insufficient escaping on user supplied data and lack of sufficient preparation on the existing SQL query in the update_guest_persistent_cart() function. The abandoned_cart_info value, populated from attacker-controlled checkout fields such as the SMS consent field, is passed through stripslashes() and concatenated directly into an UPDATE statement while the adjacent SELECT and INSERT use prepared statements. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to append additional SQL to the query. Because the sink is an UPDATE ... SET on the wp_usermeta table, the injection can both extract sensitive information from the database via time-based blind techniques and modify usermeta rows; it has been demonstrated to escalate an arbitrary account to administrator by writing a wp_capabilities row that shadows the legitimate one.

CWE ID Description
CWE-89 The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. Without sufficient removal or quoting of SQL syntax in user-controllable inputs, the generated SQL query can cause those inputs to be interpreted as SQL instead of ordinary user data.

Executive Summary

This is a SQL Injection vulnerability in the Abandoned Cart Pro for WooCommerce plugin for WordPress. It allows unauthenticated attackers to inject malicious SQL code through the guest cart persistent meta_value parameter. The vulnerability exists due to insufficient input sanitization in the update_guest_persistent_cart() function, where user-controlled data from checkout fields like SMS consent is directly concatenated into an SQL UPDATE statement without proper preparation.

Detection Guidance

Detecting this vulnerability requires checking for the Abandoned Cart Pro for WooCommerce plugin versions up to 10.8.0. Inspect plugin files for the update_guest_persistent_cart() function and verify if user-controlled input like the SMS consent field is improperly escaped in SQL queries.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to extract sensitive data from your database using time-based blind techniques. They could also modify database records, including escalating an arbitrary user account to administrator privileges by altering wp_capabilities rows. This could lead to complete site takeover and compromise of all customer data.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access and exposure of personal data, violating GDPR's data protection requirements and potentially HIPAA if health-related data is involved. Organizations using this plugin may face compliance violations, regulatory fines, and loss of customer trust due to data breaches resulting from this SQL injection flaw.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update the Abandoned Cart Pro for WooCommerce plugin to version 10.8.1 or later. Disable the plugin if an update is not available. Review database logs for unusual activity, particularly in the wp_usermeta table.
