Description

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: af_unix: Return immediately when manage_oob() returns NULL for 0-length buffer. Fahad Alharbi reported that recv(0, MSG_PEEK) triggers busy-wait in unix_stream_read_generic() if recv() is blocking and the last skb in the queue is MSG_OOB skb. In such a situation, TCP returns 0 immediately regardless of blocking or non-blocking. Let's follow the behaviour.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability in the Linux kernel occurs when a recv(0, MSG_PEEK) call triggers a busy-wait loop in unix_stream_read_generic() if the last skb in the queue is an MSG_OOB skb and the recv() call is blocking. Unlike TCP, which returns 0 immediately, the Linux kernel may get stuck in a loop waiting for data.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability is specific to the Linux kernel's AF_UNIX socket handling. Detection requires checking for kernel versions affected by the issue and monitoring for abnormal CPU usage in processes using AF_UNIX sockets. Check your kernel version with 'uname -r' and compare against patched versions. Monitor system logs for processes stuck in 'D' state during AF_UNIX socket operations.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability could lead to a denial-of-service condition where the system becomes unresponsive due to the busy-wait loop. It may cause high CPU usage and system hangs when specific conditions are met during socket operations.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability is a local denial-of-service issue in the Linux kernel's AF_UNIX socket implementation. It does not directly impact data confidentiality, integrity, or privacy, which are the primary concerns for GDPR or HIPAA compliance. However, if exploited to cause system instability or crashes, it could indirectly affect compliance by disrupting logging, monitoring, or audit functions that rely on system stability.

Mitigation Strategies

Apply the latest Linux kernel security patches to address the af_unix vulnerability. Update your system using your package manager (e.g., apt upgrade, yum update) and reboot if required.
