Description

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: drm/virtio: Fix a NULL vs ERR_PTR() bug in virtio_gpu_user_framebuffer_create() Smatch complains that returning a NULL here will lead to a NULL pointer dereference in drm_mode_addfb2(). Return an error pointer instead.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability in the Linux kernel involves a bug in the virtio_gpu_user_framebuffer_create() function where returning NULL could lead to a NULL pointer dereference in drm_mode_addfb2(). The fix replaces the NULL return with an error pointer to prevent crashes.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability is specific to the Linux kernel's DRM/VirtIO driver and requires kernel-level inspection. Detection involves checking kernel logs for errors related to virtio_gpu_user_framebuffer_create() or NULL pointer dereferences in DRM operations. Use commands like dmesg | grep virtio or journalctl -k | grep -i drm to search for relevant errors.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability could cause system crashes or instability when using the Linux kernel's DRM (Direct Rendering Manager) with virtio GPU drivers. Users relying on virtualized graphics may experience unexpected failures or errors.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability is a NULL vs ERR_PTR() bug in the Linux kernel's virtio GPU driver, which could lead to a NULL pointer dereference. It does not directly impact compliance with standards like GDPR or HIPAA, as those focus on data protection and privacy rather than kernel driver stability.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the Linux kernel to a version that includes the fix for CVE-2026-98404. This vulnerability is specific to the drm/virtio component and requires a kernel patch.
