Description

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: wifi: mac80211: don't warn when an IBSS has no channel to scan ieee80211_request_ibss_scan() warns when regulatory leaves no allowed channel, but that can happen as the regdomain can change while IBSS is operating, and it can continue to operate briefly during the 60s grace period until it's shut down. Just remove the warning in this case.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability in the Linux kernel involves an unnecessary warning in the mac80211 subsystem when an Independent Basic Service Set (IBSS) has no channel to scan due to regulatory domain changes. The system warns when no allowed channels are available, but this can occur temporarily as the regulatory domain changes while IBSS is operating. The fix removes this warning since the IBSS can continue operating briefly during a 60-second grace period before shutdown.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability is related to the Linux kernel's mac80211 subsystem and IBSS scanning behavior. Detection would require checking kernel logs for warnings about IBSS scans with no allowed channels. Monitor logs with commands like 'dmesg | grep mac80211' or 'journalctl -k | grep IBSS'.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability primarily causes unnecessary warning messages in system logs when an IBSS network operates under changing regulatory domains. It does not directly impact security or functionality but may clutter logs with non-critical alerts. Users might experience confusion from these warnings, though the IBSS network remains operational during the grace period.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability does not introduce security risks or non-compliance with standards like GDPR or HIPAA. It only generates non-critical log warnings and does not affect data protection, privacy, or system integrity. No compliance impact is expected from this issue.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the Linux kernel to the latest patched version to resolve this issue. No immediate mitigation steps are required beyond standard kernel updates as this is a non-critical warning removal.
