Description

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: drm/nouveau/dmem: pin VRAM for the whole registered range Commit c32287471077 ("gpu/drm/nouveau: enable THP support for GPU memory migration") grew the device-private region that nouveau_dmem_chunk_alloc() registers from DMEM_CHUNK_SIZE to DMEM_CHUNK_SIZE * NR_CHUNKS, but left the VRAM buffer object backing that region at DMEM_CHUNK_SIZE. nouveau_dmem_page_addr() returns chunk->bo->offset plus the page's offset within the registered region, so every page past the first chunk resolves to VRAM outside the buffer object. Size the buffer object to the region it backs.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability in the Linux kernel involves incorrect sizing of a VRAM buffer object in the Nouveau graphics driver. A recent change expanded the device-private memory region but failed to resize the backing VRAM buffer, causing pages beyond the first chunk to point to invalid VRAM outside the buffer object.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability is specific to the Linux kernel's Nouveau DRM driver and relates to incorrect VRAM buffer sizing. Detection requires checking kernel version and Nouveau driver behavior. No direct network detection commands are applicable. Examine kernel logs for Nouveau-related errors or crashes after GPU memory operations.

Impact Analysis

This could lead to memory corruption or crashes when accessing GPU memory, potentially causing system instability or rendering issues. Users relying on Nouveau for graphics may experience graphical glitches or application failures.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability does not directly affect compliance with GDPR, HIPAA, or similar standards as it is a Linux kernel memory management issue specific to Nouveau GPU drivers. No evidence suggests data exposure or privacy violations.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the Linux kernel to a patched version that includes the fix for this vulnerability. Check your distribution's security advisories for kernel updates addressing CVE-2026-98518.
