Description

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: net/smc: fix UAF on lgr list traversal in smcr_port_err() smcr_port_err() traverses smc_lgr_list.list without holding smc_lgr_list.lock, allowing a concurrent smc_lgr_terminate_sched() to free an lgr while it is still being dereferenced. Hold smc_lgr_list.lock across the traversal. Update smc_ib_gid_check() to call smcr_port_err() after releasing the lock.

Executive Summary

This is a use-after-free (UAF) vulnerability in the Linux kernel's SMC (Socket Direct) module. It occurs when smcr_port_err() traverses a list without proper locking, allowing another function to free memory while it is still being accessed. Specifically, smc_lgr_list.lock is not held during traversal, enabling smc_lgr_terminate_sched() to free an entry that is later dereferenced.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability involves a use-after-free (UAF) in the Linux kernel's SMC (Socket Direct) module due to improper locking during list traversal. Detection requires kernel-level inspection for race conditions in smcr_port_err() and smc_lgr_list.list access. No direct commands are provided in the context, but monitoring kernel logs for SMC-related crashes or enabling kernel lock debugging tools like CONFIG_PROVE_LOCKING may help identify issues.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability could lead to system crashes, data corruption, or privilege escalation if exploited. Attackers might trigger the UAF to execute arbitrary code in the kernel context, potentially gaining full control over the affected system.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability is a use-after-free (UAF) issue in the Linux kernel's SMC (Socket Messaging Channel) module. It does not directly relate to data privacy, security controls, or compliance requirements such as GDPR or HIPAA. The impact is limited to potential system instability or crashes due to improper memory handling in the kernel networking stack.

Mitigation Strategies

Apply the Linux kernel patch that resolves this issue by holding smc_lgr_list.lock during traversal in smcr_port_err(). Update to a kernel version containing the fix. If patching is not immediately possible, consider disabling SMC (Socket Direct) functionality as a temporary workaround.
