Description

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: bpf: Fix immediate JMP JEQ/JNE on MIPS32 An addu instruction was emitted instead of addiu, causing the immediate value 1 to be interpreted as register $at. This made the comparison result invalid when the immediate operand was negative. Note that $at is mapped to BPF_REG_AX, which is used for constant blinding. Fix the instruction to use the immediate form. Found with test_bpf on MIPS32r1 emulated by QEMU.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability in the Linux kernel involves a bug in the BPF (Berkeley Packet Filter) subsystem on MIPS32 architecture. The issue occurs when generating code for immediate JMP (jump) instructions JEQ (jump if equal) and JNE (jump if not equal). The assembler incorrectly emits an addu instruction instead of addiu, causing the immediate value 1 to be misinterpreted as register $at. This leads to invalid comparison results when the immediate operand is negative. The $at register is mapped to BPF_REG_AX, which is used for constant blinding.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability is specific to the Linux kernel's BPF implementation on MIPS32 architecture. Detection requires checking the kernel version and BPF-related components. Use uname -a to verify MIPS32 kernel and dmesg | grep BPF to check BPF subsystem logs. No direct network detection commands are applicable.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability primarily affects systems running the Linux kernel with BPF support on MIPS32 hardware. If exploited, it could lead to incorrect behavior in BPF programs, potentially causing crashes, privilege escalation, or bypassing security mechanisms. However, the impact is limited to MIPS32 systems and requires specific conditions to be triggered.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability affects the Linux kernel's BPF (Berkeley Packet Filter) implementation on MIPS32 architecture. It does not directly impact compliance with standards like GDPR or HIPAA, as those focus on data protection and privacy rather than kernel-level instruction handling.

Mitigation Strategies

Apply the kernel patch that fixes the addu to addiu instruction change in BPF for MIPS32. Update to a patched kernel version. If using QEMU for MIPS32 emulation, ensure the emulator and kernel are updated. Monitor vendor advisories for Linux distributions.
