Executive Summary

This is a Linux kernel vulnerability in the IIO ADC driver for the ADI AXI ADC device. The issue is that the probe function does not initialize a mutex (st->lock) used to serialize register access. Without initialization, concurrent access could lead to race conditions or undefined behavior during device operations.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability affects the Linux kernel's iio: adc: adi-axi-adc driver. Detection requires checking if the affected driver is loaded and if the mutex initialization is missing. Use commands like 'lsmod | grep adi-axi-adc' to check if the module is loaded. Inspect kernel logs for errors related to mutex initialization failures.

Impact Analysis

If exploited, this could cause system instability, crashes, or data corruption in systems using the affected AXI ADC device. It may also allow unauthorized access to sensitive device registers, potentially leading to privilege escalation or information disclosure in the kernel.

Mitigation Strategies

Apply the latest kernel update or patch that resolves this issue. If a patch is not available, consider disabling the adi-axi-adc driver if not in use. Monitor kernel logs for mutex-related errors and update affected systems promptly.
