Description

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: iio: adc: ad4030: fix invalid oversampling_ratio validation In ad4030_set_avg_frame_len(), the logarithm is calculated before input validation. Passing zero or negative values leads to an undefined result from ilog2(). Validate that the input is strictly positive prior to computing its logarithm.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is in the Linux kernel's IIO ADC driver for the AD4030 device. The issue occurs in the function ad4030_set_avg_frame_len() where the logarithm of a value is calculated before validating the input. If zero or negative values are passed, the ilog2() function returns an undefined result, potentially causing unexpected behavior or system instability.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability affects the Linux kernel's IIO ADC driver for the AD4030 device. Detection requires checking if the system runs a vulnerable kernel version with the affected driver. Use uname -a to check the kernel version and grep for the driver in loaded modules. No direct network detection commands are applicable as this is a local kernel driver issue.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability could allow an attacker with local access to cause undefined behavior in the kernel by triggering invalid input values. This might lead to system crashes, data corruption, or privilege escalation. However, exploitation requires specific conditions and is not remotely exploitable.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability does not directly affect compliance with GDPR, HIPAA, or similar standards. It is a low-level kernel driver issue in the IIO subsystem that could lead to undefined behavior if invalid input is provided. No evidence suggests it impacts data protection, privacy, or security controls required by these regulations.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the Linux kernel to a patched version that includes the fix for CVE-2026-98678. The vulnerability affects the ad4030 ADC driver, so ensure the driver is updated through standard kernel updates.
