Description

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ASoC: codecs: max98363: fix uninitialized stream_config->type stream_config is not initialized before being passed to sdw_stream_add_slave(). The type field may contain garbage and is later copied to stream->type by sdw_config_stream(). Zero-initialize stream_config so type defaults to SDW_STREAM_PCM.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability in the Linux kernel involves an uninitialized variable in the ASoC max98363 codec driver. The stream_config structure is passed to another function without being properly initialized, which may cause its type field to contain random data. This could lead to incorrect stream type handling in the soundwire subsystem.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability is specific to the Linux kernel's ASoC codec driver for max98363. Detection requires checking if your system uses this driver and if the stream_config structure is uninitialized. No direct network detection commands are applicable. Inspect kernel logs for related errors or check driver initialization in the kernel.

Impact Analysis

This flaw could cause audio subsystem malfunctions, including distorted sound, device failures, or system instability. Attackers might exploit it to trigger unexpected behavior in audio processing, potentially leading to denial of service or unauthorized access to audio data.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability does not directly affect compliance with GDPR, HIPAA, or similar standards. It is a low-level kernel issue related to uninitialized memory in audio codec drivers, which does not involve data exposure or privacy risks.

Mitigation Strategies

Update your Linux kernel to the patched version where stream_config is zero-initialized. If updating is not immediately possible, avoid using the max98363 codec driver until patched. Monitor kernel logs for unexpected stream type errors.
