Description

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: tty: vcc: zero-initialize control packet in vcc_send_ctl() The stack-allocated struct vio_vcc pkt was partially initialized, leaving the tag.stype_env field uninitialized before being sent via ldc_write(), potentially leaking kernel stack data to the LDC peer.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is in the Linux kernel where a stack-allocated structure used for sending control packets was not fully initialized before being sent. This could allow uninitialized kernel memory, including sensitive data, to be leaked to another system component via the LDC peer.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability involves uninitialized kernel stack data being leaked via the tty vcc subsystem. Detection requires checking for kernel versions affected by the uninitialized struct vio_vcc pkt in vcc_send_ctl(). Inspect kernel logs for LDC-related errors or unusual network traffic patterns. Use commands like 'dmesg | grep vio' or 'journalctl -k | grep LDC' to check for related errors.

Impact Analysis

If exploited, this flaw could expose sensitive kernel memory contents to an attacker with access to the LDC peer interface. This might lead to information disclosure, privilege escalation, or further system compromise depending on the leaked data.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability involves potential leakage of kernel stack data, which could expose sensitive information. However, the provided context does not specify the impact on compliance with standards like GDPR or HIPAA.

Mitigation Strategies

Apply the latest kernel update from your Linux distribution to patch the uninitialized memory issue in vcc_send_ctl(). If immediate patching is not possible, consider disabling the vcc module via 'modprobe -r vcc' or restricting network access to affected systems until patched.
