Description

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: usb: gadget: f_uac1_legacy: validate bRequest index in generic_{set,get}_cmd generic_set_cmd() and generic_get_cmd() use the low nibble of ctrl->bRequest as an index into con->data[]: u8 cmd = (ctrl->bRequest & 0x0F); /* 0 .. 15 */ ... con->data[cmd] = value; /* OOB when cmd >= 5 */ struct usb_audio_control (include/linux/usb/audio.h) declares data as a 5-element array, so indices 5 through 15 write (or read) up to 44 bytes past the end of the array on the heap. A malicious USB host can craft a class-specific SET_CUR / GET_CUR request with an arbitrary bRequest value, triggering the out-of-bounds access from an IRQ completion handler with no further preconditions. Add an ARRAY_SIZE() guard to both functions.

Executive Summary

This is a heap-based buffer overflow in the Linux kernel's USB gadget function f_uac1_legacy. It occurs when processing USB audio control requests. The flaw allows a malicious USB host to send a crafted request with an out-of-bounds index, causing the kernel to read or write up to 44 bytes beyond a 5-element array. This happens due to improper validation of the bRequest field.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability is specific to the Linux kernel's USB gadget subsystem and requires local system access to detect. Check kernel logs for out-of-bounds access errors or crashes related to USB audio gadget functions. Monitor syslog or dmesg for kernel oops messages indicating memory corruption in USB-related modules.

Impact Analysis

If exploited, this vulnerability could allow an attacker with physical USB host access to crash the system, corrupt kernel memory, or potentially execute arbitrary code with kernel privileges. This could lead to denial of service or full system compromise on affected Linux systems.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability involves an out-of-bounds memory access in the Linux kernel's USB gadget driver, which could lead to memory corruption or arbitrary code execution. Such flaws may compromise system integrity, potentially violating data protection requirements under GDPR or HIPAA by enabling unauthorized access to sensitive data.

Mitigation Strategies

Update your Linux kernel to the latest patched version that includes the fix for this vulnerability. If immediate patching is not possible, disable the USB gadget audio function module (f_uac1_legacy) by blacklisting it or recompiling the kernel without this module.
