Description

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: rtc: spear: initialize IRQ state before requesting alarm IRQ devm_request_irq() enables the interrupt before it returns, so the handler may run while probe is still initializing the device. Initialize the MMIO address and spinlock before requesting the alarm IRQ.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability in the Linux kernel involves improper initialization of the real-time clock (RTC) device in the SPEAr platform. The issue occurs because the interrupt request (IRQ) is enabled before the device's memory-mapped I/O (MMIO) address and spinlock are fully initialized. This could lead to the interrupt handler running while the device is still being set up, potentially causing race conditions or system instability.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability affects the Linux kernel's RTC (Real-Time Clock) driver for SPEAr platforms. Detection requires checking if your system uses the affected driver and kernel version. Inspect kernel logs for errors related to the rtc-spear module or IRQ initialization failures. Use commands like 'dmesg | grep rtc' or 'lsmod | grep spear' to check for the module. If the module is loaded, verify the kernel version against the patched release.

Impact Analysis

If exploited, this vulnerability could cause system crashes, data corruption, or unexpected behavior in systems using the affected Linux kernel. It may lead to denial-of-service conditions or compromise the integrity of timekeeping functions, which could affect applications relying on accurate timestamps.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability does not directly affect compliance with GDPR, HIPAA, or similar standards as it pertains to a Linux kernel RTC driver initialization issue rather than data protection or privacy controls.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the Linux kernel to the latest patched version to resolve the rtc: spear IRQ initialization issue. Monitor kernel logs for rtc-related errors after applying updates.
