Description

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: dm-pcache: reject a kset that overruns its segment cache_replay(), the writeback worker and the GC worker read a kset of get_kset_onmedia_size() bytes and advance the position by it. A forged key_num makes that size exceed the segment's remaining space, so the advance walks past the segment and trips the cache_pos_advance() BUG_ON. Reject a kset whose on-media size exceeds cache_seg_remain() before use.

Executive Summary

This is a Linux kernel vulnerability where a forged key_num can cause a kset to overrun its segment during writeback or garbage collection. The cache_replay(), writeback worker, and GC worker read a kset of get_kset_onmedia_size() bytes and advance past the segment's remaining space, triggering a BUG_ON in cache_pos_advance(). The fix rejects ksets whose on-media size exceeds cache_seg_remain() before use.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability is specific to the Linux kernel's dm-pcache module and involves detecting forged key_num values that cause kset size overruns. Detection requires kernel-level inspection of dm-pcache operations. No standard network or system commands directly detect this issue. Kernel logs or custom scripts monitoring dm-pcache behavior may be needed.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability could lead to system crashes or instability due to the BUG_ON trigger. It may cause data corruption or loss if the overrun affects critical kernel memory. Systems using dm-pcache (device-mapper persistent cache) are at risk if attackers can forge key_num values.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability is specific to the Linux kernel's dm-pcache component and involves memory corruption due to improper bounds checking. It does not directly impact compliance with GDPR, HIPAA, or similar standards as it is a low-level system issue rather than a data protection or privacy violation.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the Linux kernel to the latest patched version to resolve the dm-pcache vulnerability. Monitor kernel logs for BUG_ON errors related to cache_pos_advance() to detect exploitation attempts.
