Description

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: xfs: don't hold buffer locks across sync transaction commit in xfs_sync_sb_buf xfs_sync_sb_buf() holds sb/rtsb buffer locks across a synchronous xfs_trans_commit(), which flushes the CIL push workqueue internally. If shutdown occurs during the CIL push, xfs_buf_item_unpin() needs to lock these buffers to fail them, causing a deadlock: setlabel: holds buf lock -> flush_workqueue(xfs-cil) CIL push worker: xfs_buf_item_unpin -> xfs_buf_lock(same buf) Remove the xfs_trans_bhold() calls so that commit releases the buffer locks normally. After the sync commit, re-acquire the buffers via mp->m_sb_bp / mp->m_rtsb_bp for the on-disk writeback.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is in the Linux kernel's XFS file system. It involves a deadlock scenario where buffer locks are held during a synchronous transaction commit, causing a conflict if a shutdown occurs during the CIL push process.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability is specific to the Linux kernel's XFS filesystem and requires kernel-level inspection. Detection involves checking kernel logs for deadlock events or XFS-related errors during filesystem operations. Commands like dmesg | grep -i xfs or journalctl -k | grep -i xfs may reveal issues. No direct network detection commands are applicable.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability can lead to system hangs or crashes due to deadlocks, potentially causing data loss or denial of service if the affected XFS file system is in use.

Mitigation Strategies

Apply the latest Linux kernel updates that include the fix for this XFS vulnerability. Reboot the system after updating to ensure the patched kernel is active. Avoid manual workarounds as they may disrupt filesystem operations.
