Error Message Manipulation in Application

Vulnerability report for CVE-2024-12139, including description, CVSS score, EPSS score, affected products, exploitability, helpful resources, and attack-flow context.

Publication date: 2026-11-02

Last updated on: 2026-11-02

Assigner: WSO2 LLC

Description

The error handling implementation fails to properly sanitize or validate user-supplied input within URL parameters under specific conditions. This allows end-users to manipulate the error messages that are displayed by the application. By exploiting this vulnerability, malicious actors can inject arbitrary content into error messages. This enables them to perform social engineering attacks, such as phishing or credential theft, by replacing legitimate error messages with malicious content, misleading users into compromising sensitive information or taking harmful actions.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability involves improper handling of user input in URL parameters, allowing attackers to manipulate error messages displayed by the application. By injecting arbitrary content into these messages, malicious actors can deceive users through social engineering tactics.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability involves improper input sanitization in URL parameters leading to error message manipulation. To detect it, monitor web application error responses for unexpected content or unusual patterns in URLs. Check for user-supplied input appearing in error messages. Test by intentionally injecting special characters or scripts in URL parameters and observe if they reflect in error pages.

Impact Analysis

Attackers could replace legitimate error messages with fake ones to trick users into revealing sensitive information or performing harmful actions. This could lead to phishing attacks or credential theft if users are misled by the altered messages.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could indirectly impact compliance with GDPR and HIPAA by enabling social engineering attacks that trick users into revealing sensitive information. Malicious actors could manipulate error messages to phish for credentials or other data, potentially violating privacy and security requirements under these regulations.

Mitigation Strategies

Implement strict input validation for URL parameters to prevent malicious content injection. Sanitize error messages to ensure they cannot be manipulated by end-users. Update WSO2 API Manager and WSO2 Identity Server to the latest patched versions.
