Executive Summary

This vulnerability in IBM Engineering Requirements Management DOORS Next 7.1 and 7.2 allows a remote attacker to access sensitive files on the server due to improper input validation. The attacker can exploit this by sending crafted requests to force the Web server to return contents of protected files like configuration files or application binaries.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check if your IBM Engineering Requirements Management DOORS Next server is running affected versions (7.1 or 7.2). Verify if the server is accessible via web requests and test for improper input validation by attempting to access sensitive files like /WEB-INF/configuration files. Use network scanning tools to identify open ports and services.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could gain access to sensitive data such as configuration files or protected resources, potentially leading to data breaches or further attacks on the system. This compromises data confidentiality and may allow unauthorized access to critical information.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive data, which may violate compliance requirements under GDPR, HIPAA, or other regulations. Exposure of protected resources or configuration files could result in data breaches, triggering legal and regulatory penalties.

Mitigation Strategies

Apply the recommended fixes: install ifix 13 or newer for version 7.1 and ifix 05 or newer for version 7.2. Ensure proper input validation is enforced in server-side forward/include operations. Restrict access to sensitive directories and files. Monitor for unusual file access patterns or unauthorized requests.
