Executive Summary

The Easy Social Icons WordPress plugin before version 4.0.3 has a vulnerability where it does not properly sanitize and escape certain settings before displaying them on front-end pages. This allows high-privilege users like Administrators to inject malicious scripts via Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) attacks, especially when the unfiltered_html capability is disabled, such as in multisite network setups.

Detection Guidance

Check the installed version of the Easy Social Icons plugin. If it is below 4.0.3, the system is vulnerable. Use WordPress admin panel or run a command like 'wp plugin list' in the WordPress directory to verify the version.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability could allow attackers with high privileges to inject and execute malicious scripts on your website. This may lead to unauthorized actions, data theft, or defacement of your site. Users with Administrator roles are particularly at risk if the unfiltered_html capability is restricted.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to data breaches or unauthorized access, which may violate compliance requirements under GDPR, HIPAA, or other regulations. Failure to address this issue may result in legal penalties, reputational damage, and loss of user trust due to compromised data integrity and confidentiality.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the Easy Social Icons plugin to version 4.0.3 or later immediately. Disable the plugin temporarily if an update is not immediately available, and review user roles with high privileges to ensure unfiltered_html restrictions are properly enforced.
