Description

vtenext before 25.02.2 contains a session identifier disclosure vulnerability that allows attackers to read the PHPSESSID value returned by the Touch web service endpoint. Attackers who can run script in the vtenext origin, such as through cross-site scripting, can bypass the HttpOnly flag and hijack authenticated sessions.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability in vtenext before version 25.02 allows attackers to access session identifiers by exploiting the Touch web service endpoint. It specifically targets the PHPSESSID value, which can be read even if the HttpOnly flag is set. Attackers can leverage this to hijack authenticated sessions if they can execute scripts in the vtenext origin, such as through cross-site scripting (XSS).

Detection Guidance

Check vtenext logs for unusual session identifier exposure via the Touch web service endpoint. Monitor network traffic for PHPSESSID values transmitted outside secure channels. Inspect web application responses for session IDs in non-HttpOnly cookies or script-accessible headers.

Impact Analysis

If you use vtenext before version 25.02, attackers could hijack your authenticated sessions by stealing session cookies. This could lead to unauthorized access to your account, data theft, or further exploitation of your system. The impact depends on the privileges of the hijacked session.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive data, violating confidentiality requirements under GDPR and HIPAA. Organizations may face compliance breaches, legal penalties, and reputational damage if session hijacking results in data exposure or unauthorized modifications.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade vtenext to version 25.02 or later to address the session identifier disclosure. Implement strict HttpOnly and Secure flags for session cookies. Disable the Touch web service endpoint if not required. Apply input validation to prevent XSS attacks that could exploit this issue.
