Description

vtenext before 25.02.2 contains an SQL injection vulnerability that allows authenticated low-privileged users to inject SQL by supplying a crafted fieldname parameter to modules/Fax/EditView.php. CWE ID Description
CWE-89 The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. Without sufficient removal or quoting of SQL syntax in user-controllable inputs, the generated SQL query can cause those inputs to be interpreted as SQL instead of ordinary user data.

Executive Summary

This is an SQL injection vulnerability in vtenext versions before 25.02.2. Authenticated low-privileged users can inject malicious SQL code via the fieldname parameter in modules/Fax/EditView.php. This allows reading arbitrary database contents, including password reset tokens stored in vte_userauthtoken.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, inspect network traffic for requests to modules/Fax/EditView.php with suspicious fieldname parameters. Check application logs for SQL error messages or unusual database queries. Use tools like SQLmap to test for SQL injection in the fieldname parameter of the Fax module.

Impact Analysis

Attackers can exploit this to read sensitive database information, including password reset tokens. This enables them to hijack other user accounts, potentially gaining unauthorized access to sensitive data or system functions.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized data access, violating GDPR's data protection requirements and HIPAA's safeguards for protected health information. Non-compliance may result in legal penalties and reputational damage.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update vtenext to version 25.02.2 or later. If an update is not possible, restrict access to the modules/Fax/EditView.php file and monitor for unauthorized database access. Review and revoke any exposed password reset tokens in the vte_userauthtoken table.
