Description

An integer overflow in the DDS RGB888 loader of AMD Compressonator SDK could allow an attacker to supply a crafted DDS file that causes an undersized heap allocation and a subsequent out-of-bounds read, potentially resulting in process termination or limited disclosure of heap memory.

Exploitability

CWE ID Description
CWE-190 The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This occurs when an integer value is incremented to a value that is too large to store in the associated representation. When this occurs, the value may become a very small or negative number.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is an integer overflow in the DDS RGB888 loader of the AMD Compressonator SDK. An attacker could exploit it by providing a specially crafted DDS file, causing an undersized heap allocation. This leads to an out-of-bounds read, potentially terminating the process or exposing limited heap memory.

Detection Guidance

Detecting this vulnerability requires inspecting DDS files processed by AMD Compressonator SDK. Monitor for crashes or memory corruption when handling RGB888 DDS files. Check logs for out-of-bounds read errors or heap corruption events during file processing.

Impact Analysis

The vulnerability may allow an attacker with local access and user interaction to cause process termination or limited disclosure of heap memory. This could lead to denial of service or exposure of sensitive data in memory.

Mitigation Strategies

Update AMD Compressonator SDK to the latest version. Avoid processing untrusted DDS files, especially RGB888 format. Implement file validation checks before processing. Restrict user permissions to limit exposure.
