Description

Webmin is a web-based system administration tool for Unix-like servers. Prior to 2.652, untrusted users with access to the File Manager or Upload and Download modules can direct Webmin's server-side URL download functionality to non-public network addresses because download destinations are not restricted by resolved IP address. This allows requests to unauthenticated intranet services or cloud-provider instance metadata endpoints that are inaccessible from the user's own system. This issue is fixed in 2.652.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability in Webmin before version 2.652 allows untrusted users with access to File Manager or Upload and Download modules to use Webmin's URL download feature to access non-public network addresses. The issue occurs because download destinations are not restricted by resolved IP addresses, enabling requests to intranet services or cloud metadata endpoints that are otherwise inaccessible.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to access internal systems or sensitive cloud metadata, potentially leading to unauthorized data access, service disruption, or further network compromise. Users with limited access could escalate privileges or exfiltrate data from restricted areas.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized data access or exfiltration, violating confidentiality requirements in GDPR and HIPAA. Organizations may face compliance violations, fines, or reputational damage if exploited.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade Webmin to version 2.652 or later to address the vulnerability. Ensure untrusted users do not have access to the File Manager or Upload and Download modules until the update is applied.
