Description

Zammad is a web based open source helpdesk/customer support system. Prior to 7.1.2, the new Vue-based ticket interface can render ticket article content without the expected output encoding. An authenticated user can store markup in an article that is interpreted when another user views the ticket, enabling stored cross-site scripting. The default Content Security Policy limits practical impact, and the classic REST/CoffeeScript interface is not affected. This issue is fixed in version 7.1.2.

Executive Summary

This is a stored cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in Zammad, a helpdesk system. It affects the new Vue-based ticket interface in versions up to 7.1.1. An authenticated user can inject malicious scripts into ticket articles, which are then rendered without proper output encoding for other users viewing the ticket.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check if your Zammad instance is running a version prior to 7.1.2. Review ticket articles for unexpected markup or scripts in rendered content. Inspect browser developer tools for CSP violations or unusual script execution in the Vue-based ticket interface.

Impact Analysis

The vulnerability allows attackers to execute malicious scripts in the context of other users' browsers when they view the affected ticket. This could lead to theft of session cookies, account takeover, or unauthorized actions on behalf of the user. The default Content Security Policy limits some impact.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could compromise data confidentiality and integrity, which are key requirements under GDPR and HIPAA. A successful exploit may lead to unauthorized access to personal data, violating compliance obligations for data protection and security.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade Zammad to version 7.1.2 or later immediately. If upgrading is not possible, disable the Vue-based ticket interface and revert to the classic REST/CoffeeScript interface. Review and tighten Content Security Policy rules to further limit script execution.
