Assigner: Joomla! Project

Description

Joomla Extension - regularlabs.com - Exposure of Sensitive Information to Unauthorized Actor in Users Anywhere extension for Joomla < 3.0.1 - An administrator can disable output of user email addresses or usernames in Users Anywhere. In affected code, attributes supplied inside a {user} or [email] / [username] tag can change those plugin settings for that render. For example, [email allow_output_email="1"] can display an email address even when Allow output of email is set to No. This bypasses the personal-data output setting; it does not bypass a separate policy that disallows Users Anywhere tags from the content source altogether.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability affects the Users Anywhere extension for Joomla versions before 3.0.1. It allows an administrator to bypass settings that restrict the display of user email addresses or usernames. By using specific tags with attributes like [email allow_output_email="1"], an attacker could force the display of sensitive information even when such output is disabled.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability involves unauthorized exposure of sensitive user information (emails/usernames) via Joomla's Users Anywhere extension. To detect it, inspect Joomla content for {user}, [email], or [username] tags with attributes like allow_output_email="1". Check extension version; if < 3.0.1, it is vulnerable. Review administrator settings for email/username output restrictions.

Impact Analysis

If you use the Users Anywhere extension on a Joomla site, an attacker with administrator access could exploit this to expose user email addresses or usernames against your intended privacy settings. This could lead to unauthorized disclosure of personal data.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized exposure of personal data, violating GDPR and HIPAA requirements for protecting sensitive information. Organizations using this extension may face compliance violations and potential penalties.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the Users Anywhere extension for Joomla to version 3.0.1 or later to address the vulnerability.
