Description

The Dynific Addons for Elementor plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to SQL Injection via the 'q' parameter in versions up to, and including, 1.3. This is due to insufficient escaping on the user supplied parameter and lack of sufficient preparation on the existing SQL query in the ae_preview_post() AJAX handler and its preview_post_filter() posts_where callback, where the value is passed through $wpdb->esc_like() (addcslashes for '_%\\') and concatenated into a single-quoted SQL LIKE literal β€” a construction that does not escape single quotes and actively escapes the backslash wp_magic_quotes places before the attacker's quote, freeing it to terminate the literal. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with Subscriber-level access and above, to append additional SQL queries into already existing queries that can be used to extract sensitive information from the database.

CWE ID Description
CWE-89 The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. Without sufficient removal or quoting of SQL syntax in user-controllable inputs, the generated SQL query can cause those inputs to be interpreted as SQL instead of ordinary user data.

Executive Summary

The Dynific Addons for Elementor plugin for WordPress has a SQL Injection vulnerability in versions up to 1.3. The issue is in the 'q' parameter of the ae_preview_post() AJAX handler. Due to insufficient escaping and improper SQL query preparation, authenticated attackers with Subscriber-level access or higher can inject malicious SQL queries. The vulnerability arises because user input is passed through wpdb->esc_like() which escapes certain characters but not single quotes, allowing attackers to terminate SQL strings and append additional queries to extract sensitive database information.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability can be detected by checking if the Dynific Addons for Elementor plugin version 1.3 or below is installed. Inspect WordPress plugin files for the ae_preview_post() function in the AJAX handler and verify if user input in the 'q' parameter is properly escaped. Look for SQL LIKE literals with improper escaping of single quotes.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability allows attackers to extract sensitive information from the WordPress database. If exploited, it could lead to unauthorized access to user data, passwords, or other confidential information stored in the database. Attackers with Subscriber-level access or higher could escalate their privileges or gain control over the website by manipulating SQL queries.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to non-compliance with GDPR and HIPAA by exposing sensitive personal data. GDPR requires protection of personal data, and a breach could result in significant fines. HIPAA mandates safeguards for protected health information, and a successful exploit could violate these requirements, leading to legal and financial penalties for affected organizations.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update the Dynific Addons for Elementor plugin to the latest version. If an update is unavailable, disable or remove the plugin. Ensure all WordPress users follow the principle of least privilege, restricting Subscriber-level access to only necessary functions.
