Description

Control Web Panel (CWP) before webpanel_version 1.30 contains an OS command injection vulnerability in the loopback API /valid_token/ route that allows unauthenticated attackers to execute arbitrary commands as root by injecting shell metacharacters into the unvalidated 'user' parameter. Attackers can send a crafted request to the /valid_token/ route, which passes the parameter unescaped into a shell_exec() call.

Executive Summary

Control Web Panel (CWP) before version 1.30 has an OS command injection flaw in the /valid_token/ route of its loopback API. Unauthenticated attackers can exploit this by injecting shell metacharacters into the 'user' parameter, which is passed unescaped into a shell_exec() call, allowing arbitrary root command execution.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check if your Control Web Panel (CWP) version is below 1.30. You can verify the installed version by running: cat /usr/local/cwpsrv/var/services/user_build or checking the web panel interface. Additionally, monitor network traffic for suspicious requests to the /valid_token/ route with shell metacharacters in the 'user' parameter.

Impact Analysis

Attackers can gain full root access to the server running CWP, leading to complete system compromise. This includes stealing data, installing malware, disrupting services, or using the server for further attacks. All systems running vulnerable CWP versions are at risk.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability likely violates compliance requirements for GDPR and HIPAA due to unauthorized root access enabling data breaches. GDPR mandates strict data protection, while HIPAA requires safeguarding protected health information. A successful exploit could result in severe legal and financial penalties.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update Control Web Panel to version 1.30 or later. If an update is not immediately available, disable the vulnerable /valid_token/ route by restricting access via firewall rules or web server configuration. Temporarily block external access to the route until patched.
