Description

The weMail WordPress plugin through 2.1.6 does not restrict a site-wide third-party email-service API key to administrators, exposing it in an admin screen that users with the Editor role can reach by default, which allows them to obtain a reusable credential usable without a WordPress session to impersonate other users and sever the site's email-service connection.

Executive Summary

The weMail WordPress plugin up to version 2.1.6 has a vulnerability where a site-wide third-party email-service API key is not restricted to administrators. This key is exposed in an admin screen accessible to users with the Editor role by default. Editors can obtain a reusable credential to impersonate other users and disrupt the site's email service without a WordPress session.

Detection Guidance

Check if users with the Editor role can access the weMail plugin settings where the API key is exposed. Inspect the plugin version to confirm if it is 2.1.6 or earlier.

Impact Analysis

If you use weMail versions up to 2.1.6, an attacker with Editor access could steal the API key and impersonate users or disable email services. This could lead to unauthorized email sending, data breaches, or service disruption without requiring a WordPress login.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could violate GDPR by exposing user data through unauthorized email access or HIPAA by disrupting email notifications for protected health information. Compliance may be compromised due to potential data leaks or service interruptions.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the weMail plugin to the latest version beyond 2.1.6 to restrict API key access to administrators only. Review user roles to ensure only trusted users have Editor privileges.
