Description

The weDocs: AI Powered Knowledge Base, Docs, Documentation, Wiki & AI Chatbot plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via 'modalPlaceholder' Block Attribute in all versions up to, and including, 2.6.1 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with contributor-level access and above, to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. Because Contributors can save posts in pending status, a malicious payload in the modalPlaceholder block attribute will execute in the browser of any admin or editor who previews or views the pending post.

Executive Summary

The weDocs WordPress plugin up to version 2.6.1 has a stored XSS vulnerability in the 'modalPlaceholder' block attribute. Due to poor input sanitization and output escaping, authenticated users with contributor access or higher can inject malicious scripts into pages. These scripts execute when an admin or editor views or previews the affected page.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability requires checking WordPress sites using the weDocs plugin for versions up to 2.6.1. Inspect posts or pages for malicious scripts in the modalPlaceholder block attribute. Use WordPress admin panel to review pending posts or enable debug logging for suspicious activity.

Impact Analysis

Attackers could steal sensitive data like session cookies or login credentials. They might also perform actions on behalf of users, deface websites, or redirect visitors to malicious sites. The impact depends on user privileges and the nature of the injected payload.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized data access or modification, violating GDPR's integrity and confidentiality principles. For HIPAA, it may compromise protected health information if exposed. Compliance risks include data breaches, lack of due diligence, and failure to protect user data.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the weDocs plugin to the latest version beyond 2.6.1 immediately. Remove or disable the plugin if updates are unavailable. Restrict contributor-level access to minimize attack surface. Scan WordPress installations for signs of exploitation.
