Description

The Mobile builder plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Privilege Escalation in all versions up to, and including, 1.4.2 via the `wcfmmp_profile_settings()` REST handler exposed at `POST /mobile-builder/v1/wcfm-profile-settings`. This is due to a PHP loose-comparison logic flaw in the meta key allow-list check β€” `strpos( $key, 'mobile_builder' ) == 0` evaluates to `true` for any key that does *not* contain the substring `'mobile_builder'` because `strpos()` returns `false` on no match and `false == 0` is `true` in PHP β€” combined with a `permission_callback` (`user_permissions_check`) that grants access to any authenticated user by only verifying `$user->exists()`. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with Subscriber-level access and above, to pass an unsanitized `data` array via the `key` and `data` parameters directly to `update_user_meta()`, overwriting arbitrary user meta on their own account β€” including the `wp_capabilities` meta key β€” to grant themselves Administrator-level privileges.

Executive Summary

This is a Privilege Escalation vulnerability in the Mobile builder WordPress plugin up to version 1.4.2. It allows authenticated users with Subscriber-level access or higher to escalate their privileges to Administrator by exploiting a PHP loose-comparison flaw in the meta key validation and a weak permission check that only verifies user existence.

Detection Guidance

Check WordPress sites for the Mobile builder plugin versions up to 1.4.2. Review logs for POST requests to /mobile-builder/v1/wcfm-profile-settings with unsanitized data parameters. Look for unauthorized updates to user meta keys like wp_capabilities.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could gain full control of your WordPress site by overwriting user meta data, including the wp_capabilities key, to grant themselves Administrator privileges. This requires only a Subscriber-level account and no additional exploits.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access and modification of sensitive data, violating compliance requirements for GDPR, HIPAA, and other regulations that mandate strict access controls and data protection measures.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update the Mobile builder plugin to the latest version. Disable the plugin if no update is available. Restrict user permissions to the minimum required. Monitor user accounts for unauthorized privilege changes.
