Stored XSS in Redux Framework WordPress Plugin

Description

The Redux Framework plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via 'multi_media' Field Array Key in all versions due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with subscriber-level access and above, to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. The wp_kses_post sanitization applied at save time operates only on array leaf values, leaving array keys entirely unsanitized; the injected key is then rendered directly into an id="filelist-<KEY>" HTML attribute without esc_attr() in Redux_Multi_Media::render(), allowing attribute breakout.

Executive Summary

The Redux Framework plugin for WordPress has a stored cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the 'multi_media' field array key. This flaw exists because user input is not properly sanitized before being saved and rendered. Attackers with subscriber-level access or higher can inject malicious scripts into web pages. These scripts execute when other users view the affected pages.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, inspect WordPress sites using the Redux Framework plugin for suspicious JavaScript in pages or posts. Check for injected scripts in the 'multi_media' field array keys. Review HTML attributes like id='filelist-<KEY>' for unexpected values. Use security plugins like Wordfence to scan for stored XSS patterns.

Impact Analysis

If you use the Redux Framework plugin, attackers could steal cookies, session tokens, or other sensitive data from your website visitors. They might also deface your site, redirect users to malicious sites, or perform actions on behalf of users without their knowledge.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to user data, violating GDPR's data protection principles and HIPAA's security requirements. Organizations may face fines or penalties for failing to protect user data adequately.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update the Redux Framework plugin to the latest patched version. If an update is unavailable, disable the plugin temporarily. Implement a web application firewall to block XSS attempts. Review and remove any suspicious scripts or payloads from affected pages.
