The Easy Social Icons WordPress plugin before 4.0.3 does not sanitise SVG files, which it adds to the list of file types that may be uploaded site-wide, allowing users with the Author role and above to upload a malicious SVG containing XSS payloads. Where another installed Easy Social Icons WordPress plugin before 4.0.3 exposes an upload route to unauthenticated visitors, the same issue can be triggered without an account.

Executive Summary

The Easy Social Icons WordPress plugin before version 4.0.3 allows users with the Author role or higher to upload malicious SVG files due to improper sanitization. These files can contain XSS payloads. If another plugin permits unauthenticated uploads, attackers may exploit this without an account.

Detection Guidance

Check WordPress plugin versions for Easy Social Icons. Run: wp plugin list | grep easy-social-icons. If version is below 4.0.3, the system is vulnerable. Inspect uploaded SVG files for malicious scripts or unusual content.

Impact Analysis

Attackers could inject malicious scripts via SVG uploads, leading to stored XSS attacks. This may allow theft of user sessions, defacement of websites, or unauthorized actions on behalf of users. Unauthenticated exploitation is possible if another plugin enables public uploads.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized data access or modification, violating GDPR's integrity and confidentiality requirements or HIPAA's safeguards for protected health information. Non-compliance may result in legal penalties or reputational damage.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the Easy Social Icons plugin to version 4.0.3 or later immediately. Disable SVG uploads if not required. Review user roles to ensure only trusted users have Author access or higher. Remove any suspicious SVG files from the uploads directory.
