Description

The Tapo Cloud MQTT broker contains a broken access control vulnerability in a proxy topic used by authenticated Tapo devices to request service tokens. The broker does not verify that the device ID supplied in a proxy request belongs to the authenticated device. An attacker who owns a Tapo device and knows another device's ID may obtain a device token scoped to the target device and use it to upload attacker-controlled content to the target user's Tapo Cloud storage. The content may then be presented in the Tapo app as a legitimate event. Successful exploitation may allow an attacker to upload attacker-controlled content that is presented to a target user as a legitimate Tapo event, retrieve internal service information through crafted proxy requests, or abuse Tapo Cloud outbound request capability in activity that could affect service availability.

Executive Summary

CVE-2026-105821 is a broken access control flaw in the Tapo Cloud MQTT broker's proxy topic. An attacker with a Tapo device can exploit this by knowing another device's ID to obtain a service token for the target device. This token allows uploading malicious content to the victim's Tapo Cloud storage, which may appear as a legitimate event in the Tapo app.

Detection Guidance

Detection requires monitoring Tapo Cloud MQTT broker logs for unauthorized proxy topic requests where the device ID does not match the authenticated device. Check for unusual service token requests or content uploads from unexpected device IDs.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability may allow an attacker to upload malicious content that appears as a legitimate event in your Tapo app. It could also enable retrieval of internal service information or abuse Tapo Cloud's outbound request capability, potentially affecting service availability.

Mitigation Strategies

Apply available firmware updates for Tapo devices as recommended by TP-Link. Ensure the Tapo Cloud backend has been remediated by the vendor. Monitor for suspicious activity in Tapo Cloud storage or app events.
