Executive Summary

This is a Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability in Progress Software KendoReact's Chat component. It affects versions 0.6.0 through 16.1.0. An attacker with low privileges can inject malicious JavaScript by supplying a Chat message containing an unsafe URL in an openUrl quick action. When a user clicks this action, the script executes in the application's origin.

Detection Guidance

Detecting this XSS vulnerability requires inspecting applications using KendoReact versions 0.6.0 through 16.1.0 for unsafe URL handling in the Chat component. Check for openUrl quick actions that process user-supplied input without proper sanitization. Review browser console logs for script execution errors or unexpected behavior when clicking Chat messages.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could steal user sessions, deface the application, or perform actions on behalf of users. Users clicking malicious links in the Chat component may unknowingly execute harmful scripts, compromising their data or the application's integrity.

Compliance Impact

This XSS vulnerability could lead to unauthorized data access or modification, violating GDPR's integrity and confidentiality principles. For HIPAA, it may expose protected health information, risking compliance with security requirements.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately upgrade KendoReact to a version beyond 16.1.0 where this issue is resolved. If upgrading is not possible, implement input validation to sanitize URLs in Chat messages and disable unsafe openUrl actions. Apply Content Security Policy (CSP) headers to mitigate XSS impact.
