Executive Summary

This is a Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability in Progress Software KendoReact's Editor component. It affects versions 2.7.0 through 16.1.0. A low-privileged attacker can inject malicious JavaScript by supplying Editor content with a link containing an unsafe URL. When another user clicks the link, the script executes in their browser.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability can be detected by inspecting Editor content in KendoReact applications for unsafe URLs or JavaScript execution attempts. Manually review Editor components for links with suspicious href attributes or scripts. Use browser developer tools to monitor network requests and console logs for unexpected JavaScript execution when clicking Editor links.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could steal session cookies, redirect users to malicious sites, or perform actions on behalf of the user. Users with access to sensitive data or administrative functions are at higher risk. The impact depends on user privileges and the application's functionality.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized data access or modification, violating GDPR's data protection requirements or HIPAA's safeguards for protected health information. Organizations may face compliance penalties if exploited.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade KendoReact to a version beyond 16.1.0. Implement input validation to sanitize Editor content, blocking unsafe URLs or scripts. Use Content Security Policy (CSP) headers to restrict inline script execution. Apply output encoding when rendering Editor content to prevent XSS payloads from executing.
