Description

The Dokan: AI Powered WooCommerce Multivendor Marketplace Solution WordPress plugin before 5.3.3 does not use a trusted site-owned sender address when relaying its store contact form, instead placing the unauthenticated submitter's supplied address directly in the message's From header rather than a Reply-To, allowing unauthenticated attackers to make the site email its own vendors with the sender spoofed to an address at the site's own domain (such as its administrator), aligned with the domain's own SPF/DKIM.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability affects the Dokan WordPress plugin before version 5.3.3. It allows unauthenticated attackers to spoof email sender addresses in the store contact form. The plugin does not use a trusted site-owned sender address, instead placing the submitter's email directly in the From header. This lets attackers send emails from the site to its vendors with spoofed sender addresses that appear to come from within the site's own domain, such as an administrator's address.

Detection Guidance

Check the WordPress plugin version for Dokan. If it is below 5.3.3, the system is vulnerable. Inspect email headers of messages sent via the store contact form for spoofed sender addresses.

Impact Analysis

Unauthenticated attackers can send spoofed emails to your vendors or users, making them appear as if they come from your site's administrators or trusted addresses. This could lead to phishing attacks, reputational damage, or unauthorized actions if recipients trust the spoofed emails. The vulnerability also undermines email authentication mechanisms like SPF and DKIM.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could impact compliance by enabling phishing attacks that trick users into disclosing sensitive data, violating GDPR's data protection principles or HIPAA's security rules. Spoofed emails may lead to unauthorized access or data breaches, potentially resulting in regulatory penalties or legal consequences.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the Dokan plugin to version 5.3.3 or later immediately. Review email logs for suspicious activity and ensure SPF/DKIM settings are correctly configured.
