Description

A flaw was found in the management interface of the Quarkus framework, specifically within the quarkus-vertx-http component. The issue occurs when the framework incorrectly combines the management root path with specific permission rules, leading to a situation where security policies are applied to the wrong internal paths. As a result, an attacker can bypass intended authorization checks and gain unauthorized access to sensitive management endpoints.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is an authorization bypass flaw in the Quarkus framework's management interface, specifically in the quarkus-vertx-http component. It occurs when the management root path is set to '/q' without a trailing slash. Security policies are incorrectly applied to non-existent paths like '/qsecret' instead of the actual endpoint '/q/secret', leaving the real management endpoint unprotected. Attackers can exploit this to bypass authorization checks and gain unauthorized access to sensitive management endpoints.

Detection Guidance

Check Quarkus application logs for unauthorized access attempts to management endpoints, particularly paths under /q/secret or similar. Inspect network traffic for requests to unexpected paths like /qsecret. Verify security policy configurations for misconfigured path concatenation in the quarkus-vertx-http component.

Impact Analysis

An attacker with local access or access to the private management network could exploit this flaw to bypass authentication and access sensitive management endpoints. This may lead to unauthorized viewing of confidential information or altering configurations, potentially causing data exposure or system compromise.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive data, violating confidentiality requirements in GDPR and HIPAA. Unauthorized configuration changes may also breach integrity and access control provisions, potentially resulting in non-compliance with these regulations.

Mitigation Strategies

Apply the latest Quarkus framework updates or patches addressing this issue. Ensure management endpoints are not exposed to untrusted networks. Review and correct security policy path configurations to prevent incorrect concatenation. Monitor for unauthorized access attempts to management interfaces.
