Improper Process Isolation in Apache Syncope

Vulnerability report for CVE-2026-109083, including description, CVSS score, EPSS score, affected products, exploitability, helpful resources, and attack-flow context.

Description

Improper isolation or compartmentalization vulnerability in Apache Syncope. An administrator with adequate entitlements can import arbitrary BPMN process definitions via the REST API and then start the process. When a BPMN process containing a JUEL expression is imported and started, the expression is executed directly on the server, with no sandbox. This issue affects Apache Syncope: from 3.0.0-M0 through 3.0.16, from 4.0.0-M0 through 4.0.8, from 4.1.0 through 4.1.3. Users are recommended to upgrade to version 4.0.9 / 4.1.4, which fix this issue by rejecting BPMN definitions including expression attributes.

Executive Summary

This is an improper isolation vulnerability in Apache Syncope. An administrator with proper permissions can import a BPMN process definition via the REST API and start it. If the BPMN process contains a JUEL expression, the expression executes directly on the server without any sandbox restrictions.

Detection Guidance

Check Apache Syncope versions between 3.0.0-M0 to 3.0.16, 4.0.0-M0 to 4.0.8, and 4.1.0 to 4.1.3. Review BPMN process definitions imported via REST API for JUEL expressions. Look for unauthorized process executions.

Impact Analysis

An attacker with administrator access could exploit this to execute arbitrary code on the server by importing a malicious BPMN process. This could lead to full system compromise, data theft, or disruption of services.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could violate compliance requirements by allowing unauthorized code execution, potentially leading to data breaches. Organizations using affected versions may fail to meet security controls in GDPR, HIPAA, or other standards.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade Apache Syncope to version 4.0.9, 4.1.4, or later. Ensure BPMN definitions with expression attributes are rejected. Restrict administrator entitlements to prevent arbitrary BPMN imports.
